INTRODUCTION

Not everyone with cancer will experience cancer pain, but some do. This largely depends on the type and stage of cancer, the patient’s pain tolerance and the treatment that is being applied. If the cancer is spreading or has recurred, the chance of cancer associated pain is higher. However, most cancer pain is manageable, and pain management contribute greatly to quality of life.

WHAT CAUSES CANCER PAIN?

Some of the cancer pain may derive from invasive growth; in other words, pain caused by the cancer growing into or destroying nearby tissue. For instance, as a tumor grows, it can press on nearby nerves, bones or organs. The tumor may also release chemicals that cause pain or the body may react to these chemicals in a way that causes pain.

HOW IS CANCER PAIN TREATED AT ESPERANCE?

At Esperance, we believe in reducing the tumor burden, which will directly minimize cancer pain. In addition, through referral to the pain management department at the co-located Bumrungrad hospital, appropriate pain management options are available. This includes pain relievers such as aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, opioid medications, antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs and steroids. Aside from medication, we also provide acupuncture, physical therapy and meditation to ease cancer pain.
